The Block Island Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department has been proudly serving our island community for 100 years.
Our mission is to protect and preserve life and property from fires and to provide assistance in medical emergencies. Our organization protects a wide range of infrastructure and open land on Block Island, including homes, businesses, an airport, two harbors, and a ferry terminal, as well as thousand of acres of wild land.
We are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit in the State of Rhode Island.
We welcome dedicated volunteers who are willing to serve and protect our community as firefighters or emergency medical technicians.
To become a volunteer you will need to attend two consecutive meetings which are held at the fire station on the second Monday of every month. At the first meeting, you will submit an application (provided at the meeting) which will be reviewed by the department. If approved, you will be invited to become a member at the next monthly meeting. After a thirty-day waiting period, you will become a full member of the department.
EMT volunteers must be certified in the State of Rhode Island or be licensed in a state that has reciprocity with Rhode Island.
