The Block Island Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department was founded 100 years ago in 1925 and we've been protecting our community ever since. Our dedicated, highly-trained volunteers are on call 24/7 to preserve and protect life and property from fires and to provide assistance in medical emergencies.
Our volunteers devote many hours to training in modern firefighting and rescue techniques. Our vehicles are maintained in top condition, and we continually upgrade our trucks and firefighting equipment. In preparation for larger fires like the one at the Harborside Hotel, we have partnered with Southern League Mutual Aid departments on the mainland, that will help us respond to any emergency.
We provide a wide range of emergency services to the community, including fire suppression for structures and wildland fires, hazardous materials response, including smoke, fumes, gas odors, vehicle fires, and emergency medical services. Last year our department responded to more than 600 fire and medical emergency calls.
